These records were submitted by Mike McCord of Olathe, Kansas in 2024. John McCord (Family AA), Grandson of David, d. 1758, (Family A) Document 1A yellowed piece of paper found in in an old family Bible owned by John McCord, (b. 1784)1, stated in part: John McCord was born in Westmoreland Co., about April 4, 1784. Mary McCord was b. about April 4, 1786….Following are the names of relatives of John McCord: Grandfather: David McCord Parents: William and Sarah McCord—maiden name Carr (sic. Kerr). Stepmother Elizabeth Ward Brothers and Sisters: David, Mary, William, Michael, James, Jane, Margaret, Sarah and John. Document 2A brief history of the McCord family: The first name on the list is David McCord who lived in Pennsylvania, Westmoreland County, between the towns of Chambersburg and Shi pping Town (e.g., Shippensburg). William McCord, son of David, emigrated to Kentucky in fall after Wayne defeated the Indians. And that was August 20, 1793, at the town of Waynesfield on the Maumee River. William first settled near Lexington, Kentucky but afterwards moved to Fleming Co. 3. Letters dating to the year 1843 in the possession of Jean P. McCord of Tallahassee, Fla. (dec'd.) state William McCord who married Sarah Kerr was the son of "David McCord, of Lancaster" (d. 1758). She states, "This William McCord (who intermarried with Sarah Kerr) was, by family record, the oldest son of David of Lancaster, and was born prior to 1741..." Finally, the author (Michael L. McCord) has had his entire DNA genome sequenced and is a close match to other known descendants of David of Lancaster, including John David McCord of Christian County, KY. SupportJohn was the son of William McCord (ca 1735-37), the oldest son of David. Mr. Adams, a resident of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, was a descendent of Eleanor McCord Collins, the daughter of John McCord. He possessed the Bible at the time of his death, however it's whereabouts since then is unknown.21 The paper gave the genealogy of the McCord line of Fleming, Kentucky, beginning with David McCord (wife's name not given), his son William who married first to Sarah Kerr, and secondly to Elizabeth Ward, and their children (all children by first wife). It also contained the genealogy of Sally McCarty, wife of John McCord (son of Wm. & Sarah). George L. McCord manuscript gives the genealogy of his grandfather, Michael McCord (1765-70 Pa., d. after 1840 Shelby Co., Ind.). William was christened 1/31/1762 by Rev. John Cuthbertson @ home of Ben Brown, "William, son of Henry McCor," members of Paxton Church, Cumberland Co.). Henry is a family name. According to descendant Harry McCord, Jansen, NE, Henry is a family name. He stated his grandfather Thomas (b. 1814) also was nicknamed Henry. Originally part of Lancaster County in 1729, then York County in 1749, then Cumberland County in 1750, Franklin County became an independent jurisdiction on Sept., 1784. Willam and his son, William, served in the Revolutionary War under Captain William Strain in Franklin Co., Pa (Rev. War Soldiers of Franklin Co., Pa. by Shannon Fendrick, 1966, Chambersburg, Pa.). He also may have served in Westmoreland County, Pa. in 1776, under the command of Stephan Bayard. William owned a tavern on the border between Fleming and Nicholas County, Kentucky, based upon "tavern or ordinary licenses" in Mason County (before Nicholas or Fleming were formed) in the years 1795, 1796, and 1798. "Register of Marriages and Baptisms performed by Rev. John Cuthbertson, 1751-91, by. S. Helen Fields, Wash., D.C., 1934, p.109.; 1810 Nicholas Co., Ky. Census [5m 1800-10, 1m 1794-1800, 1m bef 1765, 1f 1794-1800, 1f 1784-1794, 1f 1765-1784, 1f bef. 1765], 1820, 1830 Fleming Co., Ky. Census. William died just a few days following the sale of some land for $120 to Maria Allen Chandler (his 3rd wife's sister, and widow of Nathaniel Chandler, with ten minor children). The indenture is dated April 19, 1834, just three days after signing his Will. Both William and Margaret McCord signed, and Margaret relinquished her Dower rights. Perhaps the transfer of this land might have been a final goodwill gesture to aid a relative in need(recorded in Fleming Deed Book S, page 317); from "McCord Was Their Name", by Joe Gardner, Independence, Mo., p. 20. His Will was signed 4/16/1834 and proved 5/26/1834 (Will Book E, pages 76-77) on the oath of William K. McCord and William Stockdale. John McCord, Sr. was administrator. Fleming Co., Ky., by Bell, p. 21. **While entirely supposition, only one marriage record of early McCords has not been identified with a specific family member. It was for a William McCord who married Peggy Flournog in Fleming County on November 7, 1820 (Fleming Co. marriage bonds by Talley, p. 63, Wm. McCord Will, 5/26/1834, Bk. D, p. 76-77, Ky. State Hist. Soc. Mag. V. 39, p. 385). Is it possible this was William McCord Senior's second wife?? If not, then who was this William McCord? (Michele Brooks of Cypress, Ca. has a theory that Peggy Flourning may have been Margaret Vannoy. Peggy is a nickname for Margaret and Flourning could have been a mistranslation of Vannoy, due to the illegibility of the original writing). ***Michele Brooks feels Margaret's 1st husband was John Vannoy (d. bef. 1820), whom she married on 8/18/1810 in Adams Co., Oh. He was the son of John Vannoy, and had the following bros. & sisters; (1) Elizabeth (1790 Ky., 1846 Higland Co., Oh), m. James D. Noland on 3/13/1806, (2) William, b. 1798 Madison Co., Ky., d. 4/17/1868 Highland Co., Oh., m. Catherine McCray on 2/26/1817. That William's first wife was named "Martha" was determined from the death certificate of their son, Michael who died 20 August 1854, at age 49, in Trimble Co., Ky., that lists his parents as William and Martha McCord. Subsequently, an affidavit by Nathaniel McCarty, found by Karen Prater of Flemingsburg, Ky, in the marriage of daughter Polly to Joseph Sullivan has confirmed the name Martha. My rationale for William having three marriages is based upon the Martha's age in the 1810 Nicholas Co. Census, "born before 1765". Assuming she was born in 1764, she would have to have been at least 49 years old at the time of Thomas McCord's birth in 1814. In addition, son David McCord (b. 1805) stated in the 1880 Daviess Co., Ind Census that his mother was of "domestic birth", while Thomas McCord stated in the 1880 Jefferson Co., Ne. Census that his mother was of "foreign birth" According to Joe Gardner of Independence, Mo. Thomas McCord indicated his mother was born in Ireland in the 1885 Jefferson Co., Ne. Census, however this has not been confirmed. Margaret moved to Daviess Co., Ind. in 1839 (per family tradition by Marie McCord of Oakland City, Ind.), and bought 40 acres in SW Martin County (NW-NW-S12) on January 14, 1840. She married Isaac Harris on May 30, 1840, by Rufus Brown ("Hoosier Journal of Ancestry", Vol XVI, Feb. 1992, page 53). Margaret's death date is not known, but occurred after Isaac Harris's death, 1/1863 and before 1870, in Daviess or Martin Co., Indiana. |
